A lot of people may not be that familiar with the history of the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, perhaps thinking that it is one of the newer resort casinos on the Las Vegas strip. This property has a pretty rich history though going all the way back to its opening in 1969, and remains an icon on the Las Vegas strip all these years later.

On my last trip, I was up and decided to go home with a profit. Last day decided to really cool the slot play. So I was in Caesars, drinking free budweisers playing 5 pennies a spin on Village People. That machine has a volume control, so I hit several whopping bonuses and just let the machine sing YMCA and had a whole bunch of people in the casino singing along.

Casino legend Kirk Kerkorian, who had already built the very impressive Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, purchased the 80 acre property across the street from the Flamingo in 1967, and had some big plans for it.

He built what was at the time the world’s largest hotel, called the International Hotel. To get the place off the ground, he brought in none other than Elvis Presley to perform there, who moved in, and lived there and put on shows there right up until shortly before his death in 1977.

The International Hotel was sold to Hilton Hotels in 1970, and for almost all of its history, was known as the Las Vegas Hilton. It changed hands several times since, becoming part of the merger between Hilton and Bally’s to form Park Place Entertainment, which later became Caesar’s Entertainment.

In 2004 the Las Vegas Hilton was sold to Resorts International, who changed the name to LVH — Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in 2012. Later that year, at a foreclosure auction, it was bought by a partnership between Goldman Sachs and Gramercy Capital, who sold it to its present owner, Westgate, in 2014, and it became renamed the Westgate Las Vegas.

The Westgate is legendary for bringing in a lot of big performers and events to Las Vegas, and although the names aren’t as big as they used to, and you don’t see the biggest names in show business performing in Vegas any longer, they still have a good variety of regular shows, including 4 performances a week from Cameo, as well as regular shows from comedian Vinnie Favorito, the long running burlesque show Sexxy, and Purple Reign, the award winning tribute to Prince.
